The Swan Princess Part III

For a benevolent bloodsucker, his dating strategies are as blunt and unsophisticated as a stalker. He watches Bella while she sleeps, unbeknownst to Bella herself. He follows her around, claiming:

"I followed your scent."

Reader, I thought that men who did this got a face-full of pepper-spray, not wet kisses.

How is he romantic? A total unknown quantity, without any shade of personality but for his indecision on whether to kill or kiss this girl. And of course, he thinks the answer will reveal itself if he ogles her enough. Does this sound like Romeo?

Yet, female readers of all ages, and even some gentlemen, passionately thirst for a taste of his love. I've heard it said that Edward is "selfless," or "a perfect gentleman." He doesn't seem to be watching Bella while she sleeps for any other pleasure than his own, that is: if he even derives pleasure from it. I cannot say I know him well enough after an entire novel's worth to clearly state what Edward likes.

Edward's personality, beyond his frustrated dither, again "fang or fuck," cannot be discovered in the entire book. Anything he says comes back to this teeter-totter, anything he does is connected to this see-saw. He does nothing else but brood over the situation.

Oh! But he enjoys baseball. Alas, reader! it's a common interest among vampires.

Back into vagueness again we plunge!

That Edward loves Bella should reveal something about him. After all, our loves are a reflection of the things we value in life and in others. However, Bella, as I'm sure you remember, has no real character distinction either. So, it's difficult to say what he sees in her thereby allowing us to say: "Oh, he likes girls who ___; that might mean he's a ____ kind of guy."

(Is Stephanie Meyer a mystery writer? She certainly has a knack for leaving out important details to throw us off!)
